COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to investigative reporting skills, its practice and methods, as well as the values of investigative reporting – accountability, justice and public service.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the workshop, students should know the basics of investigative reporting: what it is, why to do it, and knowledge of some of the tools to do it. The techniques of how to do it will be followed up by later sessions with practicing investigative journalists.

What is Investigative Journalism – does it matter, and if so, to whom?
What makes a good story? – is it worth investigating?
What are common subjects of IJ?
(Business, foreign affairs, public policy, environment, corruption (football); miscarriage of justice; minority affairs)
Become an expert – Back ground Research. The importance of diligent research
Working with activists, other groups.
How do you start your inquiries
Find a lead – what are your interests?
Sources – who are they & how to access them? (primary and secondary sources)
Getting documents & the paper trail – check for credibility, reliability & accountability
Access on internet/social networks/Freedom of Information
Choosing your medium - & Techniques of investigation.
Getting people – Interviewing techniques; Doorstepping, infiltration, impersonation, secret filming & the problems of dealing with difficult & obstructive people.
Ethics and safety of journalists, sources and material.
The rules and dangers of collecting ‘evidence’ on sound or film - secret filming and recording
The importance of trust
The dangers of the internet
Working within print and broadcast rules
Organise and analyse information
Testing the Evidence & analysing facts –
Ensuring all your facts are correct.
Electronic evidence – data journalism etc
- Speaking to the right people
Writing up the story – production & storytelling techniques.
- The best way to write the story for print.
- The best way to produce the story for television.
- How to bring the story to life.
- The importance of the main characters and how to tell their story

Please send your motivational letter, and Transcript of Records (or scanned index) no later then 22nd of March 2016 to tkliskic@fpzg.hr, with a written statement of English language proficiency B2 level.

After the worskhop, students will continue work on the practival assignment under the guidance of their mentor-professor or mentor-journalist in coordination with dr. Harris. The outcome of the workshop is an investigative or in-depth article, package, documentary in the FZPG student media (Global, TVS, Radio Student or their online editions). Students who attended the workshop and fulfilled the requirements (attendance, literature, produced an investigative or in-depth story) will be nominated for 2,5 ECTS.
